Mellow Blues at the Hambone Art Gallery

I stopped in Stan Street’s Hambone Art Gallery around 3:30 pm to say hello to Stan. It was Thursday and although the Juke Joint Festival hadn’t officially begun, there was already music happening all over town. As I arrived, Stan was on the small stage playing drums and harmonica with an artist called ‘Mississippi’ Marshal. Marshal’s appearance immediately made Burl Ives come to mind. But it ended with appearance. Marshal played a number of blues standards with a deep smooth voice and a beautiful melodic guitar style. This was countered perfectly by Stan’s harmonica playing which either continued the smooth groove or added some bite to the affair. Two of my favorite numbers were “High Heeled Sneakers” and “Bring it on Home.” It was the perfect way to spend an hour, relaxing with a beer from bar listening to a perfect set of mellow blues.
